The Essentials Six: Orange, Eucalyptus, Lemon, Lavender, Peppermint and Tea Tree essential oils

The problem

The essential oil aisle is built to confuse you.

Walk into any store and you'll find dozens of bottles, vague "signature blends", and price tags that make no sense. Some brands sell one small bottle for $30 or more through a "consultant".

Most people end up with a drawer of half-used bottles and still aren't sure which one to reach for.

The truth: a handful of classic oils do almost all the work. Aromatherapists have relied on the same few for generations.

Why these six

Four jobs. Six oils. Every room covered.

Almost every reason to use an essential oil falls into one of four jobs. These six were chosen because, between them, every job is covered twice over, and they all blend well with each other.

How to use them

Five easy ways to use essential oils at home.

No special skills needed. If you can count drops, you can do all of these.

  1. In a diffuser

3–5 drops per 100 mL of water. Run it for 30–60 minutes at a time. Check your diffuser's instructions for its size.

  2. As a room or linen spray

100 mL of water, 1 teaspoon of rubbing alcohol or witch hazel, and 15–20 drops. Shake before each use.

  3. In a warm bath

Mix 5 drops into a tablespoon of carrier oil or unscented body wash first. Oil and water don't mix on their own.

  4. For massage

Always dilute: about 12 drops in 30 mL (2 tablespoons) of a carrier oil like sweet almond or jojoba.

  5. On a cotton ball

2–3 drops, tucked into a closet, drawer, car vent clip or gym bag. Refresh every few days.

Questions

Good to know.

Do I need a diffuser?

No. A diffuser is the easiest way to scent a room, but you can also use a room spray, a bath, a cotton ball, or a washcloth in the shower. All are explained above.

How long will the kit last?

Each 15 mL bottle holds roughly 300 drops. At 5 drops per diffuser session, the kit gives you around 360 sessions. Used a few times a week, that's months of use.

Can I put them directly on my skin?

Not undiluted. Mix about 12 drops into 30 mL of a carrier oil like sweet almond or jojoba, and test on a small patch of skin first.

Which oil should I try first?

Orange or Lavender. Both are soft, familiar scents that almost everyone likes. Then try the Wind Down blend: 3 drops Lavender, 2 drops Orange.

Are they safe to use?
  • For external use and aromatherapy only. Never swallow essential oils.
  • Always dilute before putting oils on skin, and try a small patch first.
  • After putting citrus oils (Lemon, Orange) on skin, stay out of strong sun for 12 hours.
  • Keep bottles away from children and pets. Ask your vet before diffusing around cats.
  • Pregnant, nursing, or managing a medical condition? Check with your doctor first.
Where do you ship from?

From our facility near Montreal, Quebec. Free shipping included.

Is Natural Scents an MLM?

No. We're a family business that makes our own products and sells them directly. No consultants, no memberships, no middlemen.
